This has been a difficult year for all of us. From the high-tension presidential election to the unexpected global pandemic and widespread lockdowns, we have all been through quite a lot. Of course, some of us have been through more than others. It can be difficult for those who don’t have very much to manage during the holiday season. For this reason, Immersion Recovery Center participates in an annual food drive, donating a wide range of non-perishable goods to local families in need. This year, join us for our annual Thanksgiving food drive as we work together to make a difference in the community.

Each year we hold a yearly food drive among our employees. We give the donated food to a local charity of our choosing, working together to make a positive impact. Over the course of the next several weeks, all of our employees are going to bring in canned food, pasta and other non-perishable food items to donate.

Interestingly, there is a significant correlation between experiencing high stress and having a lack of necessities during the holiday season and turning to substance abuse. In general, the holidays can be very triggering – especially holidays during which the family gathers together in a confined space. Many individuals who have struggled with substance abuse in the past come from somewhat dysfunctional families. Doing what we can to help these families can actually have an impact on a return to drinking and/or drugging. We do what we can to help eliminate this stress and keep those who have struggled with substance abuse in the past on the road to recovery.

Donating to charities geared towards helping less fortunate members of society allows them to enjoy the holidays in the way we all deserve to!

Positive Impact On Our Clients

One of the main lessons we work to impart on each and every one of our clients is the importance of continuously helping others. Not only do our employees participate in our annual Thanksgiving food drive, but our clients are encouraged to help in any way that they can. Of course, we do not expect them to donate non-perishable food items – we do, however, allow them to work directly with the charitable organizations, bringing the donations and dropping them off in person. Not only does having hands-on experience with a charity work to foster a sense of gratitude, but it shows our clients what a positive impact they can have on other people and on the world around them if they maintain sobriety long-term. Many of our clients have reported that the Thanksgiving food drive is one of their very favorite activities, and that it has opened their eyes in a new and extremely beneficial way.

United Way of Palm Beach County organizes a food drive called Project Thanksgiving every year around the holiday season. Donate to the organization online, donate by check made payable to United Way of PBC/Project Thanksgiving or simply send a text. You can also host your own food drive, requesting the participation of your friends, family or place of employment. The Soup Kitchen

8645 W. Boynton Beach Blvd.
Boynton Beach, Florida 33472
https://thesoupkitchen.org/

The Soup Kitchen, located in Boynton Beach, Florida, has been serving the local community since 1983. Between the years 1983 and 2018, The Soup Kitchen served well over 3 million hot meals and handed out over 6 million bags of food. In 2002, the organization began handing out whole turkeys and traditional trimmings each year to their guests right in time for their annual Thanksgiving feasts. This year, the organization anticipates that over 1,000 local families will enjoy a special holiday meal in their homes all thanks to the generosity of local community members. In addition to food, the soup kitchen collects donations of clothing and other household necessities, making them available to those in need at absolutely no cost.

There are several ways in which you can participate this holiday season. Simply donating a turkey or another staple of the traditional Thanksgiving feast can make a major impact. Of course, with over a 1,000 turkeys to cook up come thanksgiving, the organization is also looking for volunteers who are willing to cook a meal and distribute or serve the donated food. if you would like to volunteer, donate or simply learn more about the organization feel free to follow the website link above.
