Addiction Treatment
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

At Immersion Recovery Center, we offer a comprehensive and integrated addiction recovery program that is deeply rooted in traditional methods of therapeutic intervention. Addiction treatment is not a straightforward process, and it requires a variety of highly individualized treatments that are combined to treat the substance abuse disorder itself as well as any potential underlying disorders (such as mental illnesses). Every effective recovery program simultaneously treats the lasting consequences of active addiction as well – the interpersonal issues that are bound to arise, their ability to socialize and adequately communicate, problems at work or at school, legal issues and inevitable financial issues. Therapy is beneficial for numerous reasons, and there are various types of therapy available and accessible to help treat all aspects of addiction – which is an extremely far-reaching disease.

At Immersion Recovery Center, our Addiction Therapy program combines proven and effective therapeutic methods, including individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy and behavioral therapy. The type of behavioral therapy that we most commonly employ is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT. We also regularly utilize Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT. If you or someone you love has been struggling with active addiction or has attempted to quit beforehand with little success, we are available to help. Give us a call today to learn more about our therapeutic addiction recovery program.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

What is CBT? According to the Mayo Clinic, this proven therapeutic methodology is used to treat a wide range of issues in an integrated fashion. The Mayo Clinic also notes that CBT is very often the chosen form of psychotherapy because it allows issues to be addressed quickly and effectively – more therapeutic benefit will be derived from a shorter period of time. Some of the benefits of CBT include:

  • Treating a mild or moderate mental illness when medication is not necessary (this includes substance abuse disorders).
  • Learn healthy coping skills that can be employed whenever high-stress situations present themselves.
  • Manage the symptoms of addiction and prevent a relapse back into addictive and self-destructive ways.
  • Identify healthy ways to manage uncomfortable emotions, and begin to utilize and develop skills in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Learning how to communicate and resolve disagreements or conflicts within interpersonal relationships.
  • Successfully overcoming last emotional trauma that could be directly linked to post-traumatic stress, emotional or physical abuse or any other unresolved traumatic experience or series of experiences.
  • Managing symptoms associated with chronic pain without the use of medication.

How Safe is CBT?

In most cases, CBT is conducted as talk therapy, and there is generally no risk involved whatsoever. Of course, as is the case with personal growth, clients are liable to feel slightly emotionally uncomfortable at times. At Immersion Recovery Center, we encourage our clients to open up, be vulnerable and look thoroughly and honestly at themselves for what might be the very first time. Because doing so much intensive therapeutic work can be emotionally draining, we allow our clients to process the emotions that may have come up for them post-therapy. We teach clients how to set and maintain healthy personal boundaries, and we never push them past their therapeutic limits. Our experienced therapeutic staff members are extremely compassionate; they always treat each and every client with the respect that he or she deserves.

CBT and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

This therapeutic method is helpful for a wide array of mental health issues in addition to addiction. An article published by the American Psychological Association found that regular CBT sessions were extremely efficacious in treating clients with post-traumatic stress disorder as well as substance abuse. At Immersion Recovery Center, we have developed a trauma-focused program based on the fact that the majority of men and women who suffer from substance abuse and dependency are also dealing with some degree of unresolved trauma. The U.S. National Library of Medicine’s National Center for Biotechnology information published a study titled “Substance use, childhood traumatic experience, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in an urban civilian population.” It was discovered through numerous trials that in individuals who suffered from a moderate or severe traumatic experience, rates of substance abuse were exceptionally high – 39 percent of nearly 600 participants about alcohol, 34.1 percent abused cocaine, 6.2 percent abused heroin and other opioid narcotics and a staggering 44.8 percent abused marijuana. This is just one exemplary study, but there are many more in circulation that confirm the relationship between addiction and unresolved trauma.

Our Drug & Alcohol Treatment Services Include

CBT is one of the most effective methods of working through unresolved trauma thoroughly and permanently. Many of our clients have attempted to work through unresolved traumatic experiences in the past, only to find that traditional talk therapy was not effective long-term. If you have been suffering from unresolved trauma or any other mental health condition, our Addiction Therapy program will provide you with the comprehensive care you need to heal mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT, is another effective therapeutic method, one that we frequently utilize in combination with CBT. It has been found that a combination of these two methods is the most effective in paving the road for lifelong recovery. DBT is a combination of behavioral and cognitive therapeutic methods. The goal of DBT is to completely transform negative patterns of thinking and self-destructive behavioral patterns into positive ones. In these sessions, our clients are able to process through uncomfortable emotions in a controlled environment. At Immersion Recovery Center, we utilize Dialectical Behavioral Therapy techniques in both group and individual therapy sessions. The main difference between CBT and DBT is that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that a client tends to feel and engage in and how they all influence one another, while Dialectical Behavioral Therapy focuses on helping clients effectively regulate their emotions. A combination of these two therapeutic methods – along with several other proven methods of addiction recovery – make for a thorough and effective overall treatment plan.
