Addiction Therapy
Our Women’s Program

Although women are less likely than men to develop an addiction, if they do, they are more likely to deal with more significant challenges and setbacks. Women face more addiction-related health and social consequences than men, and they are also more susceptible to relapse.
The Immersion Program offers a women-only treatment program that addresses addiction from the female perspective. As an addiction treatment center that subscribes to the 12-step immersion philosophy, our clients are fully engaged in recovery and acquiring the skills that will help them sustain sobriety and succeed in life after treatment.

Women Experience Addiction Differently Than Men

Addiction affects both men and women, but there are several fundamental differences in how substance use develops and evolves among women. For example, women are more likely to use smaller amounts of substances for a shorter period before they become addicted. Additionally, women are more likely to use drugs or alcohol to cope with:

  • Mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder and disordered eating.
  • Domestic violence.
  • Physical, sexual and emotional abuse.
  • Divorce or the loss of child custody.
  • The death of a partner or child.
  • Stress.
  • Body image issues and low self-esteem.
  • Fatigue.
  • Loneliness.
  • Chronic pain, including osteoarthritis, back pain, migraines and fibromyalgia.

It’s also believed that hormonal differences affect how women respond to substances. For example, women may be more sensitive to the effects of substances than men. They may also experience more cravings and be more likely to relapse after treatment.

Benefits of Women Only Addiction Treatment

We know that when a person engages in highly specialized treatment, the more likely they are to achieve lasting recovery. There is a variety of specialized approaches to addiction treatment that can address your unique needs, interests and goals. Gender-specific, women-only treatment is particularly useful.
In The Immersion Program’s women-only addiction treatment program, women support other women on the journey toward lasting recovery. Healing involves a certain level of vulnerability, and women may not necessarily feel comfortable discussing such intensely personal issues in a co-ed setting. In women-only treatment, however, women feel safe and supported as they share their experiences with a group of people who also understand the pressures women face.

Women-only treatment:

  • Facilitates more honest, open, productive discussions.
  • Fosters camaraderie and community through similar life experiences.
  • Reduces the possibility of romantic distractions so women can focus solely on healing.

Women-Only Treatment at The Immersion Program

By combining gender-specific treatment with our commitment to the 12-step program, The Immersion Program’s curriculum is highly specialized, community-based and immersive. Our gender-specific program equips women with the skills they need to progress through our recovery programs and succeed in life after treatment.
Community is fundamental to the 12-step program and our own philosophy because it establishes a support network of people who share similar goals. Women have the opportunity to relate to one another and bond over shared life experiences, as well as new experiences. In addition to clinical programming and group sessions, we regularly arrange outings and activities for members of our women-only program, including:

  • Beach trips
  • Surfing
  • Swimming
  • Nature walks
  • Softball
  • Barbecues
