Drug Abuse & Addiction Statistics – Southern Florida
Rates of drug abuse and addiction are exceptionally high in Florida. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there were a total of 67,367 drug-related overdose deaths in the US during the year 2018. Of these fatalities, 4,698 occured in the state of Florida. Of all the fatalities in Florida, 68 percent (3,189) were directly linked to opioid narcotics like heroin or certain prescription painkillers. Rates of prescription drug abuse are exceptionally high throughout the state – slightly higher than the national average. For every 100 Florida residents, providers write an average of 53.7 opioid prescriptions. The 2018-2019 Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Annual Report for the state of Florida suggests that the three most commonly dispensed narcotic painkillers (for the fourth year consecutively) were oxycodone, hydrocodone and Alprazolam. However, the same study notes a small decline in the number of opioid prescriptions written since 2012. “Over the past decade, opioid prescriptions in the U.S. peaked at 255 million in 2012 and then decreased to 191 million in 2017,” the study concludes. “In Florida, there has been a similar decline. Opioid prescriptions have been reduced by 13.6 percent from 15.4 million to 13.3 million prescriptions.”
While opioid abuse is a significant cause for concern statewide, there are many other frequently abused chemical substances in Florida – binge drinking patterns and marijuana use are reportedly very high among high school students. The Florida Department of Children and Families issues an annual report called the, “Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey.” The 2020 survey reported that while there had been a significant reduction in rates of alcohol and tobacco consumption among Florida youth, 9.2 percent of high school students reported binge drinking at least once within the past 30 days, and 10.7 percent of high school students reported using marijuana at least once over the course of the same time period.
