Mental Health Partial Hospitalization in South Florida

A Higher Level of Mental Health Care—Without Full Hospitalization

When mental health symptoms begin to interfere with daily life, weekly outpatient therapy may not provide enough support—but inpatient hospitalization isn’t always necessary. Guardian Recovery’s Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in South Florida offers a structured, intensive level of care designed to help individuals stabilize, build coping skills, and regain emotional balance without overnight hospitalization.

Through our Immersion Program, clients attend comprehensive therapeutic programming for 5–6 hours per day, typically 5–7 days per week, while returning home or to supportive housing each evening. Our PHP offers hospital-level intensive treatment without requiring you to stay overnight

Our multidisciplinary clinical team provides individualized care for conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and other complex mental health challenges. Treatment integrates evidence-based therapies, psychiatric care, and skill development to support lasting stability—not just short-term symptom relief.

At Guardian Recovery, healing is never one-size-fits-all. Your treatment plan is tailored to your needs, progress, and goals, with seamless transitions to lower levels of care when you’re ready—ensuring continuity, support, and long-term wellness within our South Florida continuum of care.

What Is Mental Health Partial Hospitalization?

Guardian Recovery’s Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in South Florida is a highly structured, intensive level of care designed for individuals experiencing acute mental health symptoms who need more support than outpatient therapy—but do not require overnight hospitalization.

Delivered through our Immersion Recovery Program, Mental Health PHP provides hospital-level clinical care during the day while allowing clients to return home or to a supportive living environment in the evenings. This balanced approach supports stabilization, skill development, and meaningful progress without removing individuals from their daily lives entirely. Mental Health PHP takes place at our Immersion Residential facility in Boynton Beach, FL, then transitions to our Immersion Outpatient program in Delray Beach, FL for a seamless continuum of care.

Mental Health PHP at Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program Includes:

  • Intensive daytime treatment for 5–6 hours per day, typically 5–7 days per week

  • Care within our South Florida Immersion facilities, serving Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, and surrounding areas

  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and medication management

  • Individual therapy, group therapy, and condition-specific interventions

  • Crisis stabilization and symptom reduction in a structured, supportive setting

  • Skills training for managing emotions, thoughts, stress, and daily functioning

  • Integrated care for co-occurring substance use disorders, when clinically appropriate

Mental Health PHP through Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program offers a clear pathway toward stability—helping individuals regain control, build resilience, and transition confidently into the next phase of care within our South Florida continuum of mental health treatment.

Who Is Mental Health PHP Right For?

Guardian Recovery’s Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in South Florida is designed for individuals experiencing significant mental health symptoms that require intensive, structured treatment—without the need for 24/7 inpatient hospitalization.

Through our Immersion Recovery Program, Mental Health PHP supports individuals who need daily clinical care, close psychiatric oversight, and skill development to regain stability and safely progress in their recovery.

Mental Health PHP May Be Right for You If:

You’re Experiencing Acute Mental Health Symptoms

  • Your symptoms feel overwhelming, intense, or increasingly difficult to manage

  • You’re struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, mood instability, or emotional dysregulation

  • You’re experiencing suicidal thoughts without immediate intent or imminent risk

  • Your mental health symptoms are interfering with work, school, relationships, or daily functioning

  • You’ve noticed a rapid decline in your mental health and need urgent support

You’re Stepping Down From Inpatient or Psychiatric Hospitalization

  • You’ve been stabilized in an inpatient psychiatric setting and are preparing for discharge

  • You no longer require 24-hour supervision but still need daily clinical structure

  • You want continued psychiatric care and therapeutic support during reintegration

  • Your treatment team has recommended PHP as the next appropriate level of care

Outpatient Therapy Alone Isn’t Enough

  • Weekly therapy isn’t providing sufficient support or symptom relief

  • Your symptoms continue to worsen despite outpatient treatment

  • You need daily clinical monitoring, medication adjustments, or structured therapy

  • You benefit from group therapy, skills training, and consistent accountability

You’re Managing Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

  • You experience both mental health challenges and substance use concerns

  • Mental health symptoms complicate your ability to maintain sobriety

  • You need integrated dual diagnosis care that treats both conditions together

  • You require clinicians experienced in co-occurring disorders

You Have a Safe, Supportive Evening Environment

  • You have a safe place to return to each night (home or supportive housing)

  • You’re not at immediate risk of harming yourself or others

  • You can follow safety plans and access support outside of treatment hours

  • You have access to emergency services if needed between sessions

Mental Health PHP at Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program in South Florida provides the intensity, structure, and clinical expertise needed to stabilize symptoms—while helping you build the skills and confidence to move forward safely and sustainably.

Who Is Mental Health PHP Not Right For?

While Mental Health Partial Hospitalization (PHP) provides intensive, structured care, it is not the appropriate level of treatment for everyone. Ensuring the right fit is critical for safety, effectiveness, and long-term outcomes.

Mental Health PHP at Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program in South Florida may not be the right option if:

You Require Immediate Crisis Stabilization

  • You are experiencing active suicidal intent with a plan

  • You are at immediate risk of harming yourself or others

  • You require 24/7 medical or psychiatric supervision

  • You are experiencing severe psychosis, mania, or disorientation that cannot be managed safely outside an inpatient setting

In these cases, inpatient psychiatric hospitalization is typically the safest and most appropriate starting point.

You Do Not Have a Safe Environment Outside of Treatment Hours

  • You do not have a stable or safe place to return to each evening

  • You lack access to supportive housing or a reliable support system

  • Your living environment significantly worsens your symptoms

PHP requires that clients can remain safe outside of program hours with appropriate supports in place.

Your Needs Can Be Managed With Less Intensive Care

  • Your symptoms are stable and well-managed with weekly outpatient therapy

  • You do not require daily clinical structure or psychiatric monitoring

  • You are functioning well in work, school, and relationships with minimal impairment

In these situations, traditional outpatient therapy or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) may be a better fit.

You Are Unable to Commit to the Program Structure

  • You cannot attend treatment 5–7 days per week for several hours per day

  • You are unable to consistently participate in therapy, group sessions, or clinical monitoring

  • External obligations prevent regular attendance

Consistency is essential for PHP to be effective.

Our Priority Is the Right Level of Care—Not Just Admission

At Guardian Recovery, our admissions and clinical teams conduct thorough assessments to ensure each individual is placed in the most appropriate level of care—whether that’s inpatient hospitalization, Mental Health PHP, IOP, or outpatient services within our Immersion Recovery continuum in South Florida.

If PHP isn’t the right fit, we’ll help guide you toward the care that is.

Treatment Components in Mental Health PHP

Psychiatric Services

Comprehensive psychiatric care is a core component of Mental Health Partial Hospitalization at Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program in South Florida. Our PHP is designed for individuals who need close psychiatric oversight, medication stabilization, and ongoing clinical support without inpatient hospitalization.

You’ll receive:

  • A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation within 24–48 hours of admission

  • Accurate diagnosis of mental health conditions using evidence-based assessments

  • Medication management, including starting, adjusting, or optimizing psychiatric medications

  • Close monitoring of medication effectiveness and side effects

  • Frequent psychiatric appointments (often 2–3 times per week initially)

  • Clear education about your diagnosis, medications, and treatment options

  • Coordination with your outpatient psychiatrist to support continuity of care after PHP

Medications Commonly Managed in Mental Health PHP

Our psychiatric team is experienced in treating complex and treatment-resistant mental health conditions. Medications commonly managed in PHP may include:

  • Antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, atypical antidepressants)

  • Mood stabilizers

  • Antipsychotic medications

  • Anti-anxiety medications

  • Sleep medications

  • Medications for ADHD and related conditions

Medication decisions are always individualized and made collaboratively, with careful attention to safety, symptom relief, and long-term stability.

Expert psychiatric care makes the difference.
Our psychiatrists specialize in complex mental health presentations—especially when symptoms are severe, medications need adjustment, or previous treatments haven’t been effective. In Mental Health PHP, medication management is not rushed or reactive; it’s intentional, closely monitored, and integrated into your overall treatment plan.

Individual Therapy

One-on-one therapy is a critical part of Mental Health Partial Hospitalization at Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program in South Florida. These sessions provide personalized, focused support to help stabilize symptoms, process underlying issues, and build the skills needed for long-term mental wellness.

Frequency: Typically 1–2 sessions per week, 45–60 minutes per session
(Additional sessions may be recommended based on clinical need.)

Individual therapy focuses on:

  • Stabilizing acute symptoms and managing current crisis-level challenges

  • Understanding the root causes of your mental health symptoms—not just the surface behaviors

  • Processing trauma, grief, loss, or painful life experiences in a safe, structured setting

  • Developing personalized coping strategies you can use immediately outside of treatment hours

  • Setting clear, achievable treatment goals that align with your recovery and daily life

  • Safely addressing suicidal thoughts, self-harm urges, or intrusive thinking with professional support

  • Creating a long-term mental health plan to support stability after stepping down from PHP

Your individual therapist works closely with the rest of your care team—including psychiatry and group facilitators—to ensure your treatment is fully integrated. Therapy isn’t isolated or siloed; it’s part of a coordinated plan designed to help you feel safer, more regulated, and more capable of managing daily life.

In Mental Health PHP, individual therapy goes beyond weekly check-ins.
It’s structured, goal-oriented, and designed to support real progress during a critical phase of healing.

How Individual Therapy in PHP Differs from Outpatient Therapy

While both involve one-on-one counseling, individual therapy in Mental Health PHP at Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program in South Florida is more intensive, coordinated, and clinically supported than standard mental health outpatient therapy.

In Mental Health PHP:

  • Therapy is part of a hospital-level treatment plan, not a standalone service

  • Sessions focus on symptom stabilization, safety, and daily functioning

  • Your therapist collaborates closely with psychiatrists, group facilitators, and case managers

  • Progress is monitored daily, allowing for faster adjustments to care

  • Skills are practiced and reinforced immediately in group and structured programming

In Traditional Outpatient Therapy:

  • Sessions typically occur once per week or less

  • Support between sessions is limited

  • Care coordination with psychiatry or other providers may be minimal

  • Treatment moves at a slower pace and relies more on self-management

PHP-level individual therapy bridges the gap—offering the depth and consistency of inpatient care while allowing you to return home each evening.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is a core pillar of Mental Health PHP at Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program in South Florida, providing daily structure, peer connection, and skills practice in a clinically guided environment.

Unlike traditional outpatient groups, PHP groups meet multiple times per day and are intentionally sequenced to support stabilization, insight, and skill development.

Types of Groups You’ll Experience

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Groups
Learn practical tools for managing intense emotions and distress without harmful behaviors. Build skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness—especially helpful for mood disorders, trauma, and emotion dysregulation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Groups
Identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns contributing to anxiety, depression, and avoidance. Practice behavioral activation, cognitive restructuring, and exposure-based strategies to improve daily functioning and symptom control.

Process Groups
Share experiences in a safe, professionally facilitated setting. Receive validation, perspective, and feedback from peers facing similar challenges. Reduce isolation, build insight, and strengthen interpersonal skills through connection.

Psychoeducation Groups
Understand your diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment plan. Learn how the brain works, how medications support recovery, and how therapy leads to change. Knowledge empowers you to participate actively in your healing.

Trauma-Focused Groups
Explore the impact of trauma using trauma-informed, safety-first approaches. Learn grounding skills, nervous system regulation, and coping strategies to reduce trauma-related symptoms while building emotional safety.

Symptom-Specific Groups May Include:

  • Anxiety management and relaxation techniques

  • Depression and mood regulation strategies

  • Managing intrusive thoughts (OCD, PTSD)

  • Coping with panic attacks

  • Sleep hygiene and restoration

Wellness & Recovery Groups
Develop sustainable habits that support long-term mental health, including nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and self-care. Learn relapse-prevention strategies for mental health symptoms and build routines that support stability beyond PHP.

Case Management

Your case manager ensures every aspect of your care is coordinated, aligned, and working toward long-term stability—not just symptom relief.

In Mental Health PHP, case management plays a critical role in helping you navigate life both inside and outside of treatment.

Case Management Includes:

  • Coordinating care between your psychiatrist, primary therapist, and medical providers

  • Connecting you with community resources (housing support, disability services, vocational or educational resources, support groups)

  • Assisting with insurance, benefits, and financial or logistical concerns

  • Planning next steps and continuity of care after PHP

  • Identifying and addressing barriers to treatment engagement or progress

  • Advocating for your clinical and practical needs within the treatment system

Think of your case manager as the bridge between treatment and real life—helping remove obstacles so you can focus on healing.

Family Therapy & Psychoeducation

Mental health challenges affect more than one person. When appropriate, Guardian Recovery’s Mental Health PHP includes family involvement to support healing, understanding, and healthier relationships.

Family Involvement May Include:

  • Psychoeducation about your mental health condition and treatment approach

  • Communication skills training to reduce conflict and misunderstandings

  • Family therapy sessions to address relationship strain and repair trust

  • Support for loved ones impacted by your symptoms or crises

  • Guidance on how to support recovery without enabling or overwhelming

Healing relationships strengthens recovery. Involving family—when clinically appropriate—helps create a more supportive and sustainable environment beyond PHP.

Holistic & Experiential Therapies

At Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program in South Florida, mental health treatment addresses the whole person—not just symptoms. Holistic and experiential therapies complement clinical care by supporting regulation, self-expression, and mind–body connection.

Holistic Approaches May Include:

  • Mindfulness & Meditation: Build present-moment awareness, calm racing thoughts, and reduce anxiety

  • Yoga & Movement: Reconnect with your body, release tension, and improve emotional regulation

  • Art Therapy: Express emotions and experiences creatively, especially when words feel difficult

  • Music Therapy: Use rhythm and sound to support emotional processing and regulation

  • Recreational Therapy: Rediscover joy, confidence, and social connection through activity

  • Nutritional Counseling: Support mental wellness through balanced nutrition and healthy routines

These therapies help you practice regulation in real time, making clinical skills more accessible in daily life.

Dual Diagnosis: Mental Health and Substance Use

More than 50% of people with serious mental health conditions also struggle with substance use. At Guardian Recovery, we’re experts in treating both simultaneously.

Our Mental Health PHP treats dual diagnosis:

If you’re in PHP for depression and also struggling with alcohol use—both are treated together.

If you’re managing PTSD and using substances to cope with trauma symptoms—we address both simultaneously.

If you have bipolar disorder and substance use complicates medication management—we provide integrated treatment.

What dual diagnosis treatment looks like:

  • Assessment of both mental health and substance use
  • Integrated treatment plans addressing both conditions
  • Understanding how mental health and addiction influence each other
  • Skills for managing symptoms without substances
  • Medication management accounting for both diagnoses
  • Group therapy addressing both challenges
  • Relapse prevention for both mental health and substance use

You don’t have to choose which to treat first. We treat the whole person.

Length of Mental Health PHP Programs

The length of Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) at Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program in South Florida is individualized based on clinical need and progress, not a fixed timeline.

Most clients participate in PHP for 2–4 weeks, though some may benefit from additional time for complex conditions, medication stabilization, or slower symptom improvement.

Program Duration Is Based On:

  • Severity and complexity of your mental health condition

  • Speed of symptom stabilization and overall clinical progress

  • Medication effectiveness and adjustment needs

  • Engagement in therapy and skill development

  • Current safety concerns and risk level

  • Presence of co-occurring substance use or medical conditions

  • Insurance authorization and coverage guidelines

We don’t rush healing. You’ll move forward when you’re clinically stable and ready—not according to an arbitrary schedule.

After PHP: Continuing Your Mental Health Journey

PHP provides intensive stabilization, but lasting mental wellness requires ongoing support. Guardian Recovery emphasizes thoughtful transitions to ensure progress continues beyond PHP.

Stepping Down to Mental Health Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

Once symptoms are stabilized, many clients transition seamlessly into Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) within Guardian Recovery’s continuum of care.

Mental Health IOP typically includes:

  • Structured treatment 3 hours per day, 3–5 days per week

  • Reduced intensity while maintaining meaningful clinical support

  • Greater flexibility to manage work, school, or family responsibilities

  • Continued individual therapy, group therapy, and psychiatric care

  • Ongoing skill practice with gradually increasing independence

Continuity matters. At Guardian Recovery, transitions are often seamless—many clients continue working with the same clinical team, maintaining trust, momentum, and therapeutic progress.

A Seamless Continuum of Mental Health Care in South Florida

At Guardian Recovery, your care doesn’t reset when you change levels—it continues. Our Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) are part of a single, integrated Immersion Program designed to support you from stabilization through long-term wellness.

Common Questions About Mental Health Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

Clear, straightforward answers to help you understand what to expect, how the process works, and how we support you every step of the way.

If you still have questions, our admissions team is here to help you understand your options and feel confident about your next step.

Can I work or go to school during Mental Health PHP?

Mental Health PHP is highly structured, typically 5–6 hours per day, 5–7 days per week, which makes full-time work or school challenging. Many clients take medical leave, short-term disability, or a temporary academic pause during treatment. Our team will help you plan for time away so you can focus on stabilizing and healing.

This is more common than many people expect — and it’s something PHP is designed to handle. As you begin processing emotions, trauma, or adjusting medications, symptoms can temporarily intensify. You’ll have daily clinical support, frequent psychiatric check-ins, and real-time treatment adjustments to keep you safe and supported.

Not automatically. Being honest helps us support you appropriately, not punish you. Hospitalization is only considered if there is immediate danger that cannot be safely managed in PHP. Most people are able to remain in PHP with enhanced safety planning, closer monitoring, and increased clinical support.

PHP is appropriate when:

  • You’re stable enough to live outside the hospital

  • You can follow a safety plan

  • You need daily, intensive treatment, but not 24/7 supervision

Your treatment team will carefully assess risk, symptoms, and support systems to ensure PHP is the safest next step.

Medication management is a core part of Mental Health PHP. Psychiatrists meet with you frequently, especially early in treatment, to adjust medications as needed. Because PHP provides close monitoring, it’s an ideal setting for starting, changing, or stabilizing psychiatric medications.

Most major insurance plans cover Mental Health PHP when it’s clinically appropriate. Our admissions team will:

  • Verify benefits

  • Explain coverage and costs upfront

  • Advocate on your behalf

Coverage varies by plan, but we work to maximize your benefits and avoid surprises.

Most clients participate in PHP for 2–4 weeks, though length varies based on symptom severity, progress, medication stabilization, and safety needs. Treatment is never rushed — you step down when you’re ready.

If symptoms escalate or safety concerns increase, your treatment team will respond immediately. This may include additional monitoring, medication changes, or transitioning to inpatient care if needed. Your safety always comes first.

Yes. PHP allows you to return home or to supportive housing each evening, provided it’s a safe environment. Your team will help assess whether your living situation supports your recovery.

Most clients transition to Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for continued support at a lower intensity. At Guardian Recovery, this transition is seamless and coordinated — often with the same clinicians involved.

Mental Health PHP at Guardian Recovery provides integrated dual diagnosis care. If substance use is present, both mental health and substance-related concerns are treated together — not separately.
