Home / Substance Use & Mental Health Treatment Programs / Family Therapy Services South Florida
According to an article published by the US National Library of Medicine titled, “The Impact of Substance Use Disorders on Families and Children: From Theory to Practice,” addiction impacts each member of a family in a variety of ways including unmet developmental needs, emotional distress, increased risk of violence, financial insecurity and legal issues. Simply treating the individual who has been suffering from substance abuse or dependence is not enough to render treatment effective – in order for sobriety to be maintained, all members of the family must be treated simultaneously.
At the Guardian Recovery Immersion Program in South Florida, we have developed a family-oriented detox program that includes intensive family therapy. Each family therapy session is facilitated by an experienced and licensed therapist who works to improve communication and restore the family to a state of healthy functioning.
Research shows that substance use disorders can contribute to:
Emotional distress, anxiety, and unresolved conflict
Breakdown in trust and communication
Role confusion, codependency, or enabling behaviors
Increased financial, legal, and relational strain
Families often adapt to addiction in ways that create a fragile sense of balance. Without support, these patterns can persist even after treatment ends.
Family therapy at Guardian Recovery’s Immersion centers is led by licensed, experienced clinicians and focuses on:
Improving communication and emotional regulation
Addressing unhealthy patterns and boundaries
Rebuilding trust and accountability
Teaching healthy coping strategies for long-term addiction and mental health recovery
Our goal is to help families regain stability and resilience—so they are better prepared to support addiction and mental health recovery after formal treatment concludes. By strengthening the family system, we help reduce relapse risk and support lasting healing for everyone involved.
Family involvement is a critical component of effective addiction treatment. At Guardian Recovery’s Immersion treatment centers, we use a combination of evidence-based family therapy approaches to address the relational, behavioral, and emotional dynamics that often accompany substance use disorders.
Research consistently shows that treatment outcomes improve when families are engaged throughout the recovery process. By involving loved ones in therapy, we help strengthen communication, accountability, and long-term support systems.
Family Behavior Therapy (FBT)
A structured, goal-oriented approach that combines behavioral strategies with accountability and positive reinforcement. Clients and family members work together to establish recovery-focused goals, improve daily functioning, and support healthier behaviors at home.
Functional Family Therapy (FFT)
Focuses on improving communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution within the family system. This approach helps families understand how behaviors influence one another and builds practical skills to create a more supportive and stable home environment.
Multisystemic Therapy (MST)
Designed for individuals with more complex or severe substance use patterns, MST addresses multiple influencing systems—including family, peers, and environment. Treatment may involve joint and individual sessions to address challenges at both the personal and family level.
Family therapy is one part of our broader commitment to family-centered care. We also connect loved ones with continued therapy options, family support groups, educational resources, and aftercare planning to support healing well beyond formal treatment.
Family therapy is designed to support healing for both the individual in treatment and the family system as a whole. Substance use impacts every member of a family—emotionally, psychologically, and relationally. Effective recovery requires addressing these dynamics together, not in isolation.
At Guardian Recovery, family therapy focuses on restoring stability, strengthening relationships, and creating a home environment that supports long-term recovery.
Understanding current and historical family dynamics
Educating families on the disease model of addiction
Improving communication and emotional regulation
Resolving parent-child and sibling conflict
Addressing the impact of addiction on the family unit
Strengthening problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
Identifying and restructuring unhealthy behavioral patterns
Supporting consistent, healthy boundaries and parenting approaches
Building a home environment that reinforces recovery and accountability
When families are actively involved, treatment outcomes improve and recovery is more sustainable. Family therapy helps ensure that healing continues long after formal treatment ends.
In addition to family therapy, Guardian Recovery’s Immersion Program provides a comprehensive, multi-level continuum of addiction treatment designed to support individuals from initial stabilization through long-term recovery.
