Addiction Recovery
Family Therapy

Over time, family systems will develop a unique way of operating, and the individuals within the family unit will develop unique ways of interacting with one another. Patterns of interaction will allow the family to maintain some sort of balance (assuming the family is not harshly dysfunctional to begin with, of course). If one individual within the family develops an addictive disorder, the way the unit operates as a whole will be completely thrown off, and this balance will be harshly compromised. Addiction truly is a family disease. Therefore, the recovery process must involve the entire family as well. At Immersion Recovery Center, we work closely with the family members of each of our clients, providing them with support, insight and guidance and even offer a family workshop retreat where clients and their families can come to Florida for a weekend of sessions with our highly trained licensed therapists. We understand how difficult addiction is for everyone involved, and we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care to everyone who has been directly affected.

Family-related services we provide include:

  • A thorough education on the disease model of addiction.
  • The restoration of a healthy family dynamic.
  • Interactive family therapy sessions, facilitated by a licensed family therapist.
  • Involved communication with the family members of each client.
  • Ongoing support over the course of the entire recovery process.
  • A list of valuable family-related resources.

Family Outreach and Communication

When it comes to our family support program, we believe that communication is key. We understand that having a loved one in an inpatient treatment program – with limited ability to communicate with them directly – can be somewhat nerve-wracking at first. Family members will want to ensure that their loved one is safe and supported, and is receiving the quality, compassionate clinical care that he or she deserves. While we do limit the amount of time that our clients can spend on the telephone (ensuring they are focusing their full attention on their recovery), we do everything we can to keep family members in close communication with our staff members, who are available to answer any questions or address any concerns that may arise.

Upon admission, each client will be assigned a case manager, who will guide them along the recovery process and help them stick to a structured and effective treatment plan. This case manager will also stay in close communication with the family members of the client. Case managers will get to know each individual client on a personal basis, and will be able to answer any specific, personalized questions that his or her family members may have.

Immersion’s Family Therapy Program

Family therapy is a crucial component of comprehensive recovery. When one family member suffers from an addictive disorder, the other family members will react in a variety of different ways. They may begin to blame themselves for the development of the disease. They may think, “What did I do wrong?” “What could I have done differently?” They may blame their addicted loved one, and begin to develop feelings of resentment. “Why is he/she doing this to our family?” Why can’t he/she just quit?” They may grapple with intense feelings of guilt and shame, or develop codependent and enabling behaviors. In family therapy sessions, the broken family dynamic will be thoroughly addressed.

Many of the concerns that family therapy will cover include:

  • Setting and maintaining healthy boundaries.
  • Effective communication.
  • The development of effective and healthy coping skills.
  • Any feelings of resentment that may have developed over time.
  • Ways in which family members can offer ongoing support.
  • Activities and additional resources geared towards repairing the family dynamic.

Our Drug & Alcohol Treatment Services Include

We make it a priority to introduce family members to additional outside resources, so as to ensure that they have constant access to the support and guidance they need. While we hold family therapy sessions once or twice per month, we understand that there are some circumstances that may prevent the family members of our clients from being able to make an in-person session. We offer conference calls and video-chatting sessions, and provide family members who are not in Southern Florida with resources in their immediate area. No matter where you are, we have got you covered.

Support for the Entire Family

The immediate loved ones of the addicted individual might mistakenly believe that all of the work must be done in inpatient treatment – that once he or she has healed, everything will return to normal. The truth is, healing must take place across the board, and every family member who has been affected must do their part in the recovery process in order for it to be completely successful. Recovery involves a great deal of personal growth and learning, and those who are involved in the recovery process will essentially learn a new way of living. They will learn healthier means of interaction, communication and self-care. At Immersion Recovery Center, we provide support for the entire family. Our main priority is paving the road for long-term recovery, and the very best way to do so is ensure that integrated healing is taking place from the very beginning of treatment all the way through the conclusion of aftercare.

Our family therapists, case managers and counselors are dedicated to providing the family members with all of the support and instruction they need during this somewhat uncertain time. It is important to note that with personal growth will come a certain level of discomfort – family members will be asked to look at their own patterns of behavior, and make necessary changes that will help facilitate long-term recovery and comprehensive healing. We encourage family members to step outside of their comfort zones and move beyond familiar constructs and dynamics.

Our main goal is to help our clients heal and stay sober for years to come, but we also prioritize the well-being of his or her loved ones. Of course, we strive to instill each and every one of our clients with the tools necessary to maintain long-term sobriety, and we work to ensure that relapse is never a concern – or even an option. However, we want to make sure that if a return to any old behavior should occur, family members will be okay regardless of what is going on outside of themselves. This way, they will be able to offer continuous support to their loved one should they ever need any additional care.

Immersion’s Program of Addiction Recovery

Immersion Recovery Center located in the heart of South Florida is Southern Florida’s premier addiction treatment center. What sets Immersion apart from the rest is our dedication to comprehensive healing and individualized clinical care. We believe that a major part of recovery is the inclusion of family members and other loved ones in the healing process. Addiction is a complex and far-reaching disease, one that works to tear the family apart and significantly damage interpersonal relationships. In order for an individual to maintain long-term addiction recovery, his or her family must heal simultaneously. Behavioral patterns and patterns of interaction must be repaired, and effective communication skills must be taught and implemented. Our dedicated and compassionate team of case managers and therapists will provide the family members of our clients with ongoing support and guidance. Early recovery can be difficult to navigate – fortunately, we are available to help every single step of the way.
